Things to do in Hope Cove, Devon

Tucked beneath the headland of Bolt Tail in South Devon, Hope Cove is a small seaside village with big charm: two sandy beaches, thatched cottages, dramatic cliffs and a very good gallery (we may be biased). Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week, here’s how to make the most of it.

1. Visit both beaches

Hope Cove is really two villages, Outer Hope and Inner Hope, each with its own beach. Mouthwell Sands at Outer Hope is the big sweep of sand for paddling and picnics. Harbour Beach at Inner Hope is a calmer, sheltered cove where the local fishing boats still pull up.

Visiting Hope Cove with your dog - Good news for dog owners: Hope Cove has a dog-friendly beach all year round, though the rules differ between the two.

  • Harbour Beach (Inner Hope): Dogs are welcome all year, but must be kept on a lead at all times.

  • Mouthwell Sands (Outer Hope): Dogs are not allowed between 1 May and 30 September from 10am to 7pm. Outside those hours in summer, and all day from 1 October to 30 April, dogs can enjoy the beach.

Rules can change, so check the signs when you arrive and the South Hams District Council dogs on beaches page before you travel.

2. Walk the South West Coast Path

From Inner Hope, the coast path climbs to Bolt Tail, one of South Devon’s most striking headlands, with views across Bigbury Bay. Keep going and you’ll reach the secluded Soar Mill Cove, a lovely spot for a picnic. You can loop back inland via Bolberry. Go in winter for crisp air, empty paths and big skies.

3. Get on (or in) the water

Hope Cove is a popular spot for sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling, and its waters are well known with divers. Wrap up warm in the cooler months and enjoy the beaches at their quietest.

4. Explore the rock pools and stroll Inner Hope

Rock pooling is a classic family activity at low tide. Afterwards, wander through Inner Hope, which has kept much of its fishing-village character, with thatched roofs and stone cottages around every corner.

5. Eat and drink local

The village has plenty to choose from. The Hope and Anchor on the harbour front is a local institution known for fresh seafood, Head to the UK's best Craft Beer Bar - The Cove or walk round to Inner Hope where you find the stunning

Hope Cove House (they even have a sauna overlooking the beach ).

6. Browse Hope Cove Gallery

You must pop in to see us. Hope Cove Gallery is an Aladdin’s cave of original art and handmade crafts from over 30 local artists and makers, with a focus on sea-inspired work. Take home something made just down the road:

Browse our Christmas collection for handmade gifts, or shop online

7. Join Hope Cove Weekend

Hope Cove is about 5 miles from Kingsbridge and 4 miles from Salcombe. There is a bus from Kingsbridge, but check the current timetable before you travel, as services are limited.

Plan your visit

Whatever the season, Hope Cove rewards a slow day: a walk on the cliffs, lunch by the harbour and an hour browsing the gallery. We’d love to see you.
